Joshua Abarbanel is an artist who examines creation and impermanence and works in a variety of media, including sculpture, video and photography. In 2015, during an expeditionary artist residency in the Arctic Circle, he cast and launched several boats made of ice, modeled after a Norwegian rowboat. Working with ice as a medium in the Arctic invokes ideas of ephemerality, temporality, the fragility of the natural environment and climate change. His work has been exhibited at museums and galleries including the Fleming Museum of Art, Jewish Museum Berlin, Columbia University’s Bernard Kraft Center and Japanese American Cultural and Community Center.
